Every database returns what the query asks for — the problem is that most queries ask imprecisely. This module develops the query construction discipline that closes the gap between what a practitioner intends to retrieve and what the search actually returns.

What the module works through:
– Boolean logic in practice: AND, OR, NOT operators and how their sequencing and combination affect result set composition in ways that are predictable once the logic is understood
– Field-specific and controlled vocabulary searching: how databases index content, what searching specific fields retrieves versus free-text searching, and how thesaurus and subject heading systems extend retrieval to content that keyword matching misses
– Precision and recall trade-offs: understanding the inverse relationship between search precision and recall and how to design queries that optimize for the specific retrieval task rather than defaulting to one end of the spectrum
